Picture quality
Traditional cable is compressed heavily to fit hundreds of channels through coax. Most Sky channels broadcast at 1080i with 6–8 Mbps bitrate. A well-run IPTV service pushes 12–15 Mbps for 1080p and 25–35 Mbps for true 4K — noticeably crisper on any modern TV.
Where cable still wins
Let’s be honest about the tradeoffs. Cable bundles your broadband, landline, and TV under one bill — if you want that, IPTV won’t give it to you. Cable customer service (when it’s good) can send an engineer. IPTV is self-install, remote-support only.
For the vast majority of households though, those tradeoffs aren’t worth £1,000+ a year. That’s why the switch is accelerating.
The bottom line
If you watch live sport, movies, and international content — and you own a modern smart TV, Firestick, or Android TV box — IPTV delivers 80% of what cable does at 4% of the price. That’s not a marginal improvement. That’s a different category of value.
